Bremma, Brenna and Sparky: A MX Fandom Glossary

A Mutant X Fandom Glossary of Terms

The following are some Mutant X-specific fandom terms I've encountered while searching various Mutant X forums. [By the way, a good place to learn about general fannish jargon is The Fanfiction Glossary]

Adam Xero: Before Fox Entertainment's X-Men lawsuit forced the producers to alter it because it too closely resembled that of Professor Xavier, Adam's original last name was Xero. Adam therefore remained surname-less until the second season, when the voice-over proclaimed him Adam Kane for the first time.

Albion Magnus: According to early casting breakdowns, Albion Magnus was the character who would later be called Mason Eckhart. Since Magnus sounds uncomfortably similar to Magneto, this name was changed after the Fox vs. Marvel lawsuit which alleged that Mutant X was too simliar to the first X-Men film.

Brenna: An honest mistyping of Brennan Mulwray's first name, or the female version of Brennan. The less said about her the better, but if you must know, look here.

Complexa: Poking fun at her secretive nature, Brennan came up with this nickname for Lexa Pierce in the episode "She's Come Undone."

Dr. Eleanor Singer Breedlove: Dr. Singer never actually made an appearance in the show itself, but according to Tribune's faux website The Breedlove Foundation, she was the co-founder of Genomex, along with her husband, Dr. Paul Breedlove. From Dr. Singer's memorial on The Breedlove Foundation faux website: A daughter of one of the most influential families in America, Ellie Singer was a renowned pediatrics specialist in an age when there were few lady doctors.Wed to Dr. Paul in April of 1961, her lifelong vision of a children's hospital and anti-birth defects clinic became a reality three short years later. "From there, all we could do was grow." By spreading the Singer fortune and letting Dr. Paul's genius flourish, Ellie made possible all the miracles that became The Breedlove Foundation. Though her hands-on involvement and medical practice ended in the 1970's, she was always a cherished presence. Ever demure, Ellie was quoted before her death as saying, "I have only now realized what I have brought into the world." May her legacy multiply. "Mother Breedlove" (1934-1989)

Dr. Laura Varady: Though she never appeared in the show either, Laura Varady was the name of Genomex's chief psychologist, according to Tribune Entertainment's faux website Genomex.net.

Fuse: Before Marvel's X-Men lawsuit forced the producers to delete the Mutant X team's code names, Fuse was Brennan's code name.

Incident X: "Incident X" is the name of the mysterious accident which caused the destruction of Mason Eckhart's immune system, forcing him to wear a white wig and synthetic skin for protection against infection. Incident X is never named in the series, though Adam's part in the affair is obliquely mentioned by Dr. Paul Breedlove in "The Shock of the New":

Mason Eckhart: "That you don't despise [Adam] for betraying you remains a mystery to me."
Dr. Paul Breedlove: "That you hold him responsible for the collapse of your immune system would have nothing to do with that, eh?"

The one-shot Mutant X comic book "Origins" goes into more detail about the circumstances surrounding the accident. Read what the former Genomex.net faux website had to say about the incident here.

Marcus Eckhart: Mason Eckhart was originally supposed to be named Marcus Eckhart. Though the name was officially changed to Mason before the start of the series, hints of the original name do pop up in old articles, websites, and once in the series itself. If you listen carefully to the episode "Russian Roulette," you'll notice that Sonya mistakenly calls herself "an associate of Marcus Eckhart." And in Mason's biography on the faux website Genomex.net, it is stated that Mason once had a twin brother, Marcus, who drowned in an accident when the two were boys. There are certain fans who subscribe to the theory that the crazy-haired stammering man Brennan killed in the season three episode "Into the Moonless Night" was not really Mason, but Marcus Eckhart. Marcus has his own page here.

Mohan, Mohanized, Mohanization: Executive producer Peter Mohan was the head writer for the second and third seasons. Since some fans feel that the quality of the show declined during this time, "Mohanization" can refer to plot discontinuities, character misrepresentations, or blatant un-science within an episode.

Mulwary: An honest mistyping of Brennan Mulwray's last name, or a deliberate sporking of the character. An entire website devoted to The Mulwary is here.

Mutant Lex: This term was coined by Shalimar Fox, who, annoyed with Lexa's disregard for her teammates in the episode "Brother's Keeper," says: "It's time we remind her that this is Mutant X, not Mutant Lex."

Rapport. Before Marvel's X-Men lawsuit forced the producers to delete the Mutant X team's code names, Rapport was Emma deLauro's code name.

S1, S2, S3, S4: Abbreviations for season one, season two, season three, and the imaginary "season four."

Santa: Otherwise known as "Evil Santa," a fandom nickname for Lexa Pierce's unnamed Dominion contact.

Shadowfox: Before Marvel's X-Men lawsuit forced the producers to delete the Mutant X team's code names, Shadowfox was Shalimar's code name.

'Ship, 'shipper, 'shipping: A general fandom term for the romantic relationships in fiction. Wikipedia's definition is here.

Mutant X 'ship abbreviations:

-- Brenimar (Brennan/Shalimar)
-- Shalnan (Shalimar/Brennan)
-- Shalash (Shalimar/Gabriel Ashlocke)
-- Jexa (Jesse/Lexa)
-- Bremma (Brennan/Emma)
-- Jemma (Jesse/Emma)

Sparky: The nickname for Brennan Mulwray used frequently on the show.

Synergy: Before Marvel's X-Men lawsuit forced the producers to delete the Mutant X team's code names, Synergy was Jesse Kilmartin's code name.
