The Filming of "Rembrandt: Fathers & Sons"
The town of Telc in Moravia was the location for the filming of Rembrandt: Fathers and Sons. The town is centred around the Lichtenstein castle which was built in 1494. Although the colours of the homes in Telc are different from the red bricks of Amsterdam, the shapes of the buildings are identical. Its town square reflects an impressive unity as it is lined with uniform buildings. The lowest levels are Gothic, above that the style is Renaissance and the buildings are topped with Baroque gables. Director David Devine admits, This town square is at least 10 times larger than any Hollywood backlot.” Rembrandt’s famous masterpiece “The Nightwatch” was recreated by hiring a famous Slovak artist to reproduce the painting with oil paints and very close to its actual size: 12 feet by 16 feet. The difference was that the faces of two of the lead actors were painted in: Ross Petty as Captain Banning Cocq in the center and Kari Matchett as Saskia in the background. Over 20 cast and crew were flown from Canada and the United States to the production headquarters in Bratislava in the Slovakia. Much of the shooting was done just over the border in the Czech Republic. The cast and crew spent weekends visiting the many palaces and castles in the region, including the Schonbrun Castle in Vienna.
TOM McCAMUS brings his depth of experience to the emotionally charged role of Rembrandt. McCamus is one of Canada’s most respected actors. One of his most recent screen roles was in The Sweet Hereafter. Young MITCHELL DAVID ROTHPAN as Samuel already boasts an impressive roster of acting credits, all at the age of 12. KARI MATCHETT as Saskia is one of Canada’s hottest young actresses, currently playing the lead in CTV’s series Power Play. PAUL HECHT as Rabbi Menassah Ben Israel is perfect as the stubborn but well-meaning father. Comic relief is aptly provided by two supporting cast members: ROSS PETTY as the formidable Captain Cocq and SERGIO DI ZIO as Gerard, a frustrated apprentice itching for his big break.
