Double Vision
Emma: You always take me to the nicest places.
Brennan: Wasn't my choice.
Emma: How well do you know this Conlan anyway?
Brennan: I guess as well as you can know anyone you work with.
Emma: Now by work, are you talking about your past endeavors as a lowlife and a hoodlum?
Brennan: Hey! That's not very nice. Justified, but not very nice.
Jesse: So what're you going to do, keep beating yourself up about it?
Brennan: I know who I'd like to beat up.
Jesse: You'd hit a woman?
Brennan: No, no, but if there's a woman who could drive me to do it, it would be her.
Brennan: Trust me, we've been in some pretty tight situations together.
Jesse: I'll bet.
Brennan: Not that kind of tight.
Mason: You're still interested, aren't you?
Matty Conlan: And if I say no?
Mason: Well, I'd certainly never force anyone to better themselves.
Emma B: Get near me with that, Doctor, you’ve breathed your last breath.
Mason: The man you are holding is Dr. Kenneth Harrison, the GSA’s most illustrious biogeneticist.
Emma B: Is it always so damn cold in here?
Mason: Well, actually, the temperature in the lab has been lowered to inhibit the spread of germs and viruses.
Emma B: Germs freak you out, huh?
Mason: I’m afraid Dr. Harrison must complete his examination.
Emma B: Well, I’m not gonna be your latest guinea pig.
Mason: Well, this is a side of Emma deLauro that my intelligence on Mutant X told me nothing about.
Emma B: Well, I'm nothing like the rest of those Mutant X freaks.
Mason: You call your own teammates freaks?
Ken Harrison: You consider yourself normal?
Emma B: I consider myself gifted. And too valuable to be wasted as some mad doctor's lab rat.
Mason: I know it’s a ploy, but I’m intrigued. What did you have in mind?
Emma: Why not try a real experiment and let me join you?
Mason: I beg your pardon?
Emma: You heard me. I wanna leave Mutant X and come work the GSA.
Emma A: If Adam expects us to train like this, we have to think more about our safety.
Shalimar: Are you for real?!
Emma A: All I'm saying is, let's be safe out there. And in here.
Jesse: Post traumatic stress disorder.
Mason: Why do you want to leave Mutant X?
Emma B: I'm sick of their mealy-mouthed non-lethal style. I'm ready for some real action. I thought I could do well here.
Mason: Not if you think you can manipulate me. What is it you want here?
Emma B: Job satisfaction. Adam doesn't recognize my true potential.
Mason: I tried to get you to join us once before.
Emma B: No, you tried to make me your prisoner. This is the first time you've listened to what I have to say.
Mason: You've never wanted to talk to me before. Perhaps that hit from Miss Conlan affected your brain.
Emma B: What if it did? Maybe that's what it took to bring out the real me.
Mason: The real you would betray your mutant friends?
Emma B: They're a misfit gang of do-gooders that I'm forced to live with.
Mason: This is all very entertaining, but why should I trust you?
Emma B: You shouldn't. I'll have to prove myself to you.
Mason: You'll be accompanied by GS agents.
Emma B: Fine. Just as long as they don't get in my way.
Mason: I'll expect to hear from you every two hours.
Emma B: I'll be back before you have time to check your watch.
Mason: It would have been so much easier for you to just keep our appointment.
Matty Conlan: It would have been so much easier if you had just killed me when we met.
Mason: I saved you from a wasted life and turned your piddling mutant powers into something truly formidable.
Matty: All you gave me is pain.
Mason: Which will soon be over.
Emma A: What do you want?
Emma B: Tell Adam that his methods don't cut it anymore. So I'm going to put an end to Eckhart and the GSA once and for all. You know, it's so simple I'm disgusted that Adam didn't think of it sooner.
Emma A: What are you going to do?
Emma B: What they've been doing to us. Turn Genomex into one giant stasis pod.
Adam: See, the good news is, she was only pretending to join the GSA.
Emma A: Yeah, well the bad news is, she's out of her freaking mind!
Adam: I didn't know you drank.
Emma B: If you're looking for the teetotaler version, I believe she's with you.
Mason: In a big hurry, Miss deLauro? I demand to know what you're doing here. And don't use your telepathy on me.
Emma B: Promise. [punches him]
Emma: I'm so sorry, Adam, I just got scared!
Adam: Yeah, well, you're gonna be sorrier if we can't get you back together! Now I want you to go to your room, and I want you to stay there until Brennan comes to get you. Do you understand me? Go!
Brennan: That was a little harsh, wasn't it?
Adam: Well, the way this new Emma is acting, it's the only kind of thing she'll understand.
Axel: She’s just a girl, you little mama’s boy! Get your ass in there.
Shalimar: You're coming with me.
Emma B: Like hell I am.
Shalimar: [sigh] This is getting irritating. [punches her, Jesse catches her] Got her?
Jesse: Oh yeah. I got news for ya. Split Emma? Heavy as the whole one.
Mason: They had us. We would never have known what hit us.
Ken Harrison: I would like to continue my research. I feel we're getting close.
Mason: I fully support exploration into the possibilities of grafting mutancy onto low level non-new-mutants.
Ken: The research subjects would have to be expendable, of course.
Mason: Of course. Do you have anyone in mind? [Mason looks at him]
Shalimar: What’s the last thing you remember?
Emma: Meeting Matty Conlan with Brennan and then the GSA showed up.
Jesse: She doesn’t remember a thing.
Emma: About what?
Adam: Oh, about the hidden sides of Emma deLauro.
Matty: Ever wonder why we never got together?
Brennan: Well, I can't say that I've never thought about it.
Matty: So? How come you never put the moves on me?
Brennan: Well, because I don't mix business with pleasure.
Matty: Well, that was then. How about now?
Brennan: Yeah, now. Now more than ever, Matty. Don't you think this combination would be a little...combustible?
Matty: Hm. Your loss. Where can I go to get a cab around here?
Brennan: Okay, it's official. You're crazy.
Matty: Mmm-hmm.
Emma: So how insane was I?
Adam: Well, which you are we talking about?
Emma: Well, I guess they both had their moments.
Adam: Yeah, well we're all walking dichotomies. Light and dark, good and evil, yin and yang.
Emma: I think my yang took over my yin.
Adam: Yeah, well your yin put up quite a fight.
Emma: I'm sorry if I caused you guys a lot of trouble.
Adam: No. They weren't the real you.
Emma: Yeah, but if each Emma is a part of me--
Adam: No. This is definitely a case where the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts.
Blood Ties
Jesse: I’m calling it a night. You coming home?
Brennan: After I walk Dana to her car.
Jesse: See you soon.
Brennan: Not too soon, I hope.
Brennan: Hey, are you okay? What the hell happened here?
Jesse: My dad showed up.
Calvin Porter: I'm a new mutant, sir, with genetically enhanced hearing.
Mason: Is that so?
Calvin: Yes sir. In fact the sounds of the world nearly drove me out of my mind until the Genomex biotech lab created this audio filter. Now I can pinpoint any frequency over many miles. A great advantage in a field agent.
Mason: Well, Mr. Porter. With those outstanding abilities, I assume you'll be able to hear this: Don't ever speak to me directly again.
Nicole Carter: A member of my security staff invaded our database and downloaded sensitive information regarding the Martez incident.
Mason: How awful for you.
Nicole: I'm not alone out on this limb, Eckhart. Genomex shares responsibility for what happened there.
Mason: That's fascinating. We have entirely different memories of that tragedy. As far as the public is concerned, Genomex saved Nexxogen from bankruptcy, which I've always regarded as an act of unbelievable generosity, since your company is technically our competition.
Nicole: Is that how we're going to play this game? Then let me be more clear. A computer disk with information implicating your company in that incident has been stolen. If this incident comes to light, the world will learn that Martez was no industrial accident.
Mason: In other words...
Nicole: If I go down, you go down.
Mason: I'll put my agents at your disposal.
Nicole: I thought that might change your tune.
Mason: We need to get that disk back immediately.
Nicole: Ya think?
Shalimar: I knew I shouldn't have worn these pants. My underwear is riding up, big-time.
Emma: You're wearing underwear?
Shalimar: You're not?
Adam: You two done?
Shalimar: Yep. I think that about covers it.
Noah Kilmartin: I know about your team. Mutant X?
Jesse: How?
Noah: I've got my sources. C'mon, I've been in covert ops my entire adult life. I know what's happening. Particularly when it concerns my own son. I'm proud of you, Jess. It's great work you're doing.
Brennan: Someone call for a ride?
Emma: We are so screwed!
Brennan: Deactivate cloak! [The Double Helix materializes]
Emma: Or not.
Calvin Porter: It's under control, sir.
Mason: Since you don't have the disk, I'll have to assume your definition of control differs wildly from mine.
Noah Kilmartin: How do you think the world would react if it learned the truth about what happened at Martez?
Mason: That was an industrial accident.
Noah: It was new mutants. Because of the experiments Nexxogen performed at your behest, their genes replicated out of control until their bodies simply exploded. Of course, the file goes into more graphic detail.
Mason: My apologies for your rude reception, Mr. Kilmartin.
Nicole Carter: Mason, there's been another security breach at Nexxogen.
Mason: Yes. I heard they'd installed a revolving door at your facility.
Mason: You lie beautifully, Mr. Kilmartin.
Noah Kilmartin: Well, I'm not lying about this. If anything happens to my son, the deal's off.
Mason: Your loyalty is something to behold.
Noah Kilmartin: You were supposed to bring the disk here and then leave.
Jesse: Yeah, well, I lied. Kinda like you did about giving these guys the slip.
Noah: Jesse, give me the disk.
Jesse: Everybody told me what was happening. I guess I had to see it for myself, huh?
Calvin Porter: Hold it right there, champ. Hand over the disk, or become an instant orphan.
Jesse: Oh, go ahead.
Noah: What?
Jesse: Well, you've been using me all along. Go ahead. It's no loss.
Noah Kilmartin: All I ever wanted was a chance to start over again. I didn't mean to hurt you, but I had no choice.
Jesse: No choice. Y'know, you always have choices, Dad. You just made the wrong one.
Noah: My life wasn't going the way I wanted it to. I wanted to provide for you and--
Jesse: Don't, okay? Just don't.
Noah: Do you have the disk? [Jesse crushes it]
Jesse: Why couldn't you have just come back for me, huh?
Noah: Look. I know the kind of father you want. And I'm sorry, but I'm not that guy.
Jesse: Yeah. I'm sorry too.
Nicole Carter: What am I going to do?
Mason: Well, we have some wonderful job opportunities on the Genomex website. Of course, we require excellent references. And as for you, Mr. Porter. You're going to be listening to me for a long time.
Shalimar: Jess? I heard what happened. You okay?
Jesse: Yeah. I'm fine.
Shalimar: You want to talk about it?
Jesse: No.
Shalimar: Do you want me to leave you alone?
Jesse: No.
Altered Ego
Emma: Hey, Brennan, how well does Adam know Charlotte?
Brennan: Well, Shalimar said that Adam worked with her father at the Biochemistry department at Stanford. That's all I know.
Emma: I think there's a little more to it than that.
Brennan: What've you got?
Emma: Her father was Anthony Cooke.
Brennan: That guy that was convicted for selling biological weapons?
Emma: Yes. And it was Adam that turned him in.
Brennan: Wow. Charlotte can't be too fond of Adam.
Emma: It gets worse. Cooke committed suicide before the trial.
Brennan: That's rough. What's her new mutancy?
Emma: She can manipulate moral polarity.
Brennan: Bad to good or good to bad?
Emma: I guess she could go either way.
Jesse: Adam, where does it say that you get to make the decisions for everybody?
Adam: What?
Shalimar: Jesse, are you okay?
Jesse: Was I talking to you?
Adam: Hey, what--
Jesse: Don't use that tone on me, Adam, I've had it!
Shalimar: And I've had it with your attitude too, Jesse.
Jesse: OOOHH!
Mason: Might I offer a piece of my own advice? Miss Cooke is a wounded animal. We must try to convince her that we are her collaborators, not her captors. In her mind, Adam is responsible for her father's death. She wants revenge. We must harness this energy. It's priceless.
Shalimar: I was completely out of control. I could have killed him.
Adam: Or he could have killed you.
Shalimar: Not likely.
Shalimar: Are we gonna put her in some kind of stasis and keep her here?
Adam: No, we can't do that to her. I'm the one who is responsible for what happened to her.
Shalimar: No you're not. It was her father who ruined her life, not you.
Adam: Well, that's not the way she sees it.
Shalimar: Exactly. She's blaming you for this, but if you hadn't stopped her dad, who knows what would've happened?
Adam: Shalimar, I have to help her. There's no one else who can do it.
Shalimar: Okay, are we talking about the same Charlotte? Because you're thinking of the little girl you used to know. I'm thinking about the woman who almost got us killed.
Adam: All right, so what are you suggesting?
Shalimar: I'm suggesting that if you insist on going after her, you watch your back.
Jesse: Shalimar, you okay?
Shalimar: Great. But I want a rematch.
Jesse: Well, you already kicked my ass. No chance you're getting a second shot.
Emma: No one escapes from Genomex. You can't trust her.
Adam: Emma--
Emma: At least let me come with you.
Adam: No, too dangerous, not gonna have anyone else exposed to that toxin.
Emma: How are you supposed to protect yourself against the toxin?
Adam: She wouldn't do that to me. She had the opportunity before, and she didn't do it.
Emma: Just think about it for a minute. Why would she come running back to us for help?
Adam: Well, maybe she saw what life would be like over there.
Emma: That's what she wants you to think!
Adam: Look, if it's a trap, I'll deal with it. Alone.
Adam: What am I gonna do with you?
Mason: Now we've come full circle. You've gotten back at Adam for what he did to your father, and done us a great service at the same time. So how does it feel?
Charlotte Cooke: Okay, I guess.
Mason: Do I detect a conscience? Your father exhibited the same tendencies till I convinced him he had no choice but to sell me his research.
Charlotte: My father?
Mason: I worked hard to convince him. The money, in the end, was his Achilles heel. Welcome to the GSA, Miss Cooke.
Adam: Where's that feral with my files? Then again, precision isn't exactly what's called for right now, is it, my little mind-bending freak of nature?
Shalimar: Adam? I knew there was something wrong with you.
Adam: Excuse me a moment.
Shalimar: Do you recognize the language?
Emma: It's Finnish. Adam doesn't realize I dated an exchange student from Helsinki in high school.
Mason: Nice to be back?
Adam: I have something for you. This is a complete list of all the children of Genomex. But you know, I was wondering.
How would I fit in here? I'm a leader, not a follower.
Mason: Well, I've always thought of myself as--uh--a team player.
Adam: Team player. That's good. That's very good. But of course we both know that's not true. You'd have me in stasis in what, 30 seconds? No, you know, I think you should try a little stasis yourself.
Adam: What is it exactly that happens to your electricity when you get wet? When you get soaked with water, Brennan? Huh? Try to explain the phenomenon to Charlotte over here so she can understand why it makes you so weak. And what do we know about you? What's your weakest moment? When you take a breath.
Emma: Adam, look into her eyes! You're choking the one person in the world who would do anything to protect you, who loves you more fiercely than anyone else.
Adam: I want to apologize to all of you for the way I treated you all.
Brennan: Forget it. You weren't yourself.
Adam: Yeah, but I was. Ask Shalimar, ask Jesse, they both experienced it.
Shalimar: Yeah, well you couldn't control yourself, that's all.
Adam: Well, maybe, but it was still me. And I know your weaknesses and I used them against you. It was very weird. It was very dark. But you guys saved me and I don't know what to say. Thank you.
Lazarus Syndrome
Emma: Don't waste your time; she's not interested.
Brennan: Uh-huh. Maybe she's interested; she just doesn't know it yet.
Pamela Fries: Mr. Eckhart, the killer you sought is dead, finally putting an end to his rampage.
Mason: Yes. I understand your weapon of choice was a GSA vehicle.
Pamela: I must admit my methods were a little unorthodox, but I didn't want to risk losing him.
Ken Harrison: Were you at least able to retrieve the remains of Mr. Mathias? So we can perform an autopsy.
Pamela: Well...there was a commotion...
Ken: Miss Fries. In order to truly understand the criminal mind and to prevent this catastrophe from happening again, it is imperative we have a subject to examine.
Mason: Perhaps the next time you decide to do a hit and run, you'll be prudent enough to pick up the body before you run.
Emma: Why are you following me?
Shalimar: 'Cause I'm worried about you.
Emma: You're worried that I'm losing my mind and that I'm seeing things.
Shalimar: You know that's not true, Emma.
Emma: Sorry, this was a waste of time.
Shalimar: Not if it put your mind at ease. I don't mind looking.
Caleb Mathias: Welcome to my world. My home.
Pamela Fries: Morning.
Emma: Why are you doing this, Caleb?
Caleb: I don't have a choice. I have to survive.
Pamela: What do you want, sympathy? You filthy parasitic freak.
Caleb: Well, aren't you the bold one? Nice try, Emma. But your little mind games won't work on me.
Emma: What are you going to do with us?
Caleb: Never ask a question that you don't want answered.
Emma: Now try me. Pamela!
Pamela Fries: I don't think so. Eckhart's got this thing about us helping the other side. Sorry.
Pamela Fries: Now that was cool!
Shalimar: I'm going to make this real easy for you. I know you know where Caleb has my friend.
Maria: Look--
Shalimar: No, you look. All I'm asking you to do is what you've done for this creep time and time again. Tell him you've found another one. Take me to him. Now.
Jesse: When are you going to learn to stay down?
Brennan: Yo! Kiss yourself goodbye. Your nine lives are up.
Mason: Pity she couldn't be more helpful. I'm afraid the only thing left for her to tell us is the method by which she died. Forensically speaking, of course.
Ken Harrison: Hopefully, we can discover how the new mutant absorbs the life force of the other new mutants. [Pamela sits up]
Pamela Fries: What's going on?!
Mason: Well, so much for the autopsy.
Shalimar: Are you sure you should be out partying like this?
Emma: I'm fine! Besides, this is exactly what I needed.
Seth Howard: How are you two doing?
Brennan: Hey. Wanna take a hike?
Jesse: You heard him.
Seth: Next time.
Brennan: Yeah, right.
Emma: Okay, this is ridiculous, you guys. I'm fine. I can handle myself. Now go out there and have some fun. Or at least let me. I mean it, go!
Brennan: Be good.
Shalimar: Yeah, right.
Adam: Can I buy you a drink?
Emma: How about a dance?
Adam: Okay.
Emma: Okay.
Adam: And then I'll buy you a drink.
Interface
Emma: Thanks, honey! Couldn't have done it without you. You always know how to make a dramatic entrance.
Shalimar: You actually looked like you were having fun until those last two goons jumped on you.
Emma: Well, I didn't pay 'em any attention. Oh, this is so gonna piss Eckhart off.
Shalimar: I know.
Emma: So, what'd you get?
Shalimar: I got the cutest shoes! 60% off.
Emma: Nice.
Mason: I suppose I would have to say my glass is half empty, Mr. Delay. Four armed GS agents vs. two unarmed women, and it's the GS agents who end up in a pile?
Mr. Delay: I don't recall inviting you to this meeting.
Michelle Bigelow: The first thing GSA trainees are taught is to take initiative, sir.
Mason: Well, if it isn't our new secret weapon. Come in, Miss Bigelow, and share your feelings about the way we do things here at the GSA.
Michelle: The problem with the current crop of GS agents isn't their training, Mr. Eckhart. It's their trainer.
Mason: Are you saying that Mr. Delay is at fault?
Michelle: Well, I'm afraid so, sir. I accompanied Mr. Delay on the safehouse raids. The squad displayed the same lack of team effort that resulted in the embarrassment with the two women.
Mason: Your telecyber abilities make you a promising recruit, Miss Bigelow.
Michelle: Well, thank you sir. And if I may say so, I'd love to have the opportunity to fulfill that promise, sooner rather than later.
Mason: What exactly are your ultimate professional goals?
Michelle: Ultimately, I would like to have your job, sir.
Mason: And precisely how will you plan your career trajectory to get my job?
Michelle: By taking his job.
Shalimar: Think we have a mole in the underground?
Brennan: Well, anything's possible, but my instincts are telling me they're working us over from the outside.
Shalimar: Your instincts?
Brennan: Yeah, come on. I spent enough time on the wrong side. I can smell a rat a mile away.
Mr. Delay: You made me look like an idiot today, Miss Bigelow. You don't want me for an enemy.
Michelle Bigelow: I don't want you for a friend either. I simply stated things as I saw them. Now it's up to Mr. Eckhart to decide how to proceed.
Mr. Delay: It's up to you to do your job and keep your mouth shut. No one gives a damn about your insipid little opinions.
Michelle: Well, Mr. Eckhart seemed pretty fascinated.
Mr. Delay: Mr. Eckhart may have a great deal of confidence in you and your abilities--
Michelle: With good reason.
Mr. Delay: --but I don't share his enthusiasm. A word of advice, Miss Bigelow. Watch your back.
Michelle: When I want your advice, I'll beat it out of you. Now unless you want me to tell Mr. Eckhart just how your ineptitude allowed those other 8 anomalies to slip out of your grasp, I'd suggest you let me do my evening's work.
Brennan: Could you imagine connecting to computer with your mind?
Jesse: Well, anything that would do away with the carpal tunnel syndrome’s okay with me.
Brennan: Can you believe this guy?
Jesse: You wanna take him, or shall I?
Brennan: Eh--go ahead.
Brennan: Hey, you know what? The first one of you to laugh gets a jump start!
Adam: There's nothing funny about that, Brennan. Nothing funny about a sudden surprise attack from hostile forces either.
Jesse: Well, you could at least have warned us it wasn't gonna be the usual hostile forces attack, Adam.
Brennan: Yeah, I mean popping in and out like that?
Shalimar: Well, then it wouldn't be surprise or sudden, now would it?
Emma: You’re forgetting something here, Michelle. Before either of us knew about new mutants or Genomex or Mutant X, we both knew that we were different.
Michelle: And we were lucky to have each other to share our secret.
Michelle: We're on different sides of the fence now.
Emma: Come on, Michelle, fences are for climbing!
Michelle: OK. I can spend an hour and then I have to get back.
Emma: Is that an hour in real time or Bigelow time?
Michelle: I'll see you in fifteen minutes. Real time.
Adam: I bet you had trouble with video games when you were a kid, right?
Jesse: Still do.
Shalimar: Adam seems to think that Jesse's problem is that he got his butt kicked by the training simulator. What do you think? Got an opinion there, buster? Or am I bothering you?
Brennan: No, no. It's just that, for the record, I'm reading a GSA training manual file that I swiped last time we paid them a visit. I'm trying to find a clue as to how they're bypassing our security system. As for the training simulations, I think Jesse's jast taking it way too seriously.
Shalimar: It's funny. I've always enjoyed them.
Brennan: You just like anything that'll get you up and moving.
Shalimar: Well, if there's a little virtual ass kicking involved all the better. Anything we can use in there?
Brennan: No, not really. Well, other than the fact that Eckhart considers you--and this is a quote--"Shalimar Fox is by far the least interesting member of Mutant X."
Shalimar: What?! Give me that!
Brennan: Made you look.
Shalimar: You idiot.
Michelle: The GSA is a law enforcement organization, Emma, whose mission is to protect new mutants from themselves.
Emma: Please. Just because you work for the so-called law does not make the GSA moral, ethical, or right.
Michelle: I think it's time you realized what you're a part of. Mutant X is a pack of outlaws who flaunt their illegal behavior.
Emma: No, no. We do not break the law.
Michelle Bigelow: Well, you're out there wreaking havoc when you should be working within the system to make the world ready for new mutants.
Emma: And you honestly believe that's what you're doing?
Michelle: Absolutely. You think you're some kind of romantic hero, running around with Adam and the rest. Forget about it. You're nothing more than a bunch of common criminals, using your heightened abilities for your own benefit.
Emma: You're out of your mind. Adam is a man with a mission: to prepare the world for our existence one step at a time.
Michelle: Mmm. And it's Adam's mission that caused new mutants grief in the first place.
Emma: Oh, is that so? How do you feel about choosing to wear a subdermal governor?
Michelle: How do you think the world would feel if it knew there were people like us among them? With powers and abilities that dwarf the imagination?
Emma: You're starting to sound like a recruitment poster.
Michelle: We're both psionics and we both know just how crazy we can get, thanks to our abilities. The GSA saved my sanity, maybe my life.
Emma: I know you, Michelle, and I believe that you think that's true. But I'm telling you Eckhart does not have any plan for assimilation. If Adam hadn't rescued me, I would have been stuck tracking down new mutants to put in stasis pods for future observation.
Michelle: This is just like the arguments we used to have back in freshman year. I respected authority...
Emma: And I questioned it every chance I got. But you were always open to new ideas. You know, be open to the fact that maybe the GSA isn't everything you think it is.
Michelle: Fine. If you do the same for Mutant X.
Emma: Sure.
Michelle: You don't mean it, do you?
Emma: You could always read me like a book, couldn't you?
Adam: You think this all just comes to me? I mean, when you use your abilities, when you phase out and mass, it takes a concerted effort right? And Shalimar wears herself out.
Jesse: And Emma gets occasional migraines, and Brennan’s current doesn’t just happen, he has to work at it, right.
Adam: That’s right. So for all of us, it takes a lot of work, a lot of effort, a lot of concentration.
Jesse: So why is it that when I’m fighting the real GS agents, it doesn’t seem like I have to work as hard as when I’m fighting the virtual agents?
Adam: Because when it’s real life, you react instinctually. So maybe what you have to do is you have to create the mindset where you treat the simulations like they’re real life.
Jesse: When it’s the real thing, I just kind of switch onto automatic. I let my instincts take over.
Adam: That’s right. Endorphins are pumping, the adrenaline rush. Everything's pure instinct.
Jesse: I guess. Still can’t see you cramming for a final, though.
Adam: Who says I had to cram?
Michelle: When we were at Jasper’s, I actually began to question the GSA’s motives in the greater scheme of things.
Emma: Was that before or after you set me up?
Michelle: We both have our missions.
Emma: Come on, Michelle, take a look at this place. It’s nothing more than a prison for people like us.
Michelle: Don’t say that, Emma. Your credibility and our friendship are gone.
Adam: Now, let’s not be too hard on Emma. All of us have been guilty of letting our feelings for old friends blind us as to who they’ve become.
Brennan: Oh, come on, Adam. She’s a GSA trainee. It’s like walking into a lion’s den.
Shalimar: Excuse me? Last I looked, you’d been ambushed by old friends yourself.
Brennan: Okay, point made...and taken.
Emma: What’s really scary about Eckhart is that he’s convinced he’s doing the right thing by terrorizing new mutants.
Michelle: I said we weren’t gonna talk about this anymore.
Emma: You’re willing to give your entire life over to an assumption based on what someone else has told you?
Michelle: I have just as much faith in Eckhart’s cause as you seem to in Adam’s.
Emma: Faith is for God. What you're talking about is denial.
Michelle: Aren't you the one who broke into the dean of students office and stole her furniture?
Emma: Now we get the hell outta here.
Michelle: Okay, but how?
Emma: Trust me, I’ve done this before.
Mason: I'm afraid you two school girls are about to get permanent detentions.
Mason: After all the opportunities I’ve offered you, Miss Bigelow, this is how you repay me?
Emma: You know, that’s one of your biggest problems, Eckhart. It’s not always about you.
Mason: And that’s where you’re wrong, Miss deLauro. And the sooner you learn that you’re nothing but a satellite that revolves around me, we’ll all be the better for it.
Michelle: After what I saw in your database, I’m ashamed that I ever trusted you. Who do you think you are?
Mason: It’s not who I think I am that matters. It’s the fear I strike in others that makes life worth living.
Emma: And this is the guy that you trusted?
Michelle: You know what?
Emma: Yeah. We’re both over this place.
Emma: I know, I know, Adam's gonna be pissed.
Brennan: You just wait 'til we get you home, young lady.
Jesse: I did a little reading on the Gestalt concept of the willing suspension of disbelief.
Adam: Yeah, well, that’s pretty heavy stuff. I mean, we’re talking about fighting holograms here.
Jesse: Right, that’s my point. I mean, when I’m fighting virtual GS agents I can’t seem to lose myself the same as in real thing.
Adam: Right, which is why I suggested that you apply the same energy and the same effort that you do in real combat
Jesse: Maybe. You know, I think there might be another answer. I still get completely creeped out by a good horror movie, but totally lost in an action flick.
Adam: Rather trying to than pretend that its real when you know it’s a simulation, you want to sort of give yourself over to the virtual concept the way you get sucked into a movie?
Jesse: I couldn’t have put it better myself. Now it sounds like fun.
Michelle: In a matter of moments, the coordinates of all of Mutant X’s data will be at Genomex.
Emma: That’s not gonna happen, Michelle. I’m gonna show you what it’s like to feel again, whether you like it or not.
Emma: Look, I wanted to apologize to you guys.
Shalimar: Where are you going to start?
Jesse: Running away and not telling anybody?
Brennan: Yeah, turning off your comlink?
Shalimar: Hanging out with a GS agent?
Emma: OK, so I've got a lot to apologize for.
Shalimar: Forget about it. We've all been guilty of running off when our past has caught up with us.
Emma: Even Adam.
Jesse: Even Adam. We all live with one foot in our old lives and one foot in the world we find ourselves now.
Shalimar: And sometimes those two worlds just rub each other the wrong way.
Brennan: Yeah, and every once in a while we get smacked in the back of our head with a blast from our past and uh... you know, that's what we're here for. Make things right.
Emma: That's what friends are for, right?
Shalimar: Yeah. Just don't push your luck. A GS agent. I mean a GS agent, what were you thinking?
Presumed Guilty
Jesse: It is far too early to be exerting that kind of energy, Shal. It’s not normal.
Shalimar: Looks like someone could use a cup coffee.
Brennan: Better make it a pot. Look at him!
Jesse: He must have made it home pretty late last night.
Brennan: Or maybe he just didn't make it home at all. Come on, even geniuses need to get their groove on once in a while.
Lena Blake: He won’t know which end is up by the time I’m through with him.
Mason: Could you do that again?
Lena: We need to talk.
Marc Griffin: Get out of my way!
Lena: I don’t handle rejection very well. Guess you think a girl could just get lost in those eyes, huh? Guess again.
Adam: I need your help.
Marc: Let me guess. You don’t know where to hide.
Adam: Yeah, something like that.
Marc: I know a place.
Adam: Good. So we’ve got the blind leading the stupid.
Marc: Why’d you save me back there?
Adam: Cause I need some help in finding out who I am, and you’re the only person I know.
Marc: Why would I help you? You killed my girlfriend.
Adam: I don’t believe that for a second, and I don’t think you do either.
Marc: You don’t know what I think!
Adam: Look, last night I broke into a doctor’s office and did a little research on my condition.
Marc: Amnesia.
Adam: Yeah. It’s either retrograde, post-hypnotic, or emotional hysterical, usually caused by trauma. And I ruled out injury because I know that you lied to me about hitting my head. I also found out that memory loss is usually treated by sodium amobarbital or thiopental, which, fortunately for you, did nothing to alleviate my condition. So I want you to tell me what’s going on.
Marc: You sure don’t sound like a guy with amnesia to me.
Mason: Adam, a fugitive from justice. Of course, that’s what I’ve been calling him all along.
Jesse: Shalimar, none of us even want to consider this, but has it crossed your mind that we might be wrong? I mean, what if Adam was responsible for Megan’s murder?
Shalimar: What? Listen, we both know Adam’s not capable of murder.
Jesse: Yeah, right. I wish I knew what I was looking for, then I might know how to find it.
Shalimar: That’s why you’re with me.
Mason: We both know you’ve pilfered Adam’s memories. How else could you frame him for murder?
Marc: I don’t have any memories, Mason. I didn’t frame anyone for murder either.
Mason: Then how did you know my first name?
Mason: Considering Mr. Griffin has wiped his slate clean, Adam must have no idea who to trust.
Lena: Not at all. His world has been quite literally turned upside down.
Mason: Well, then perhaps he’d be receptive to a familiar face from the past.
Mason: Adam! Thank God you’re all right.
Adam: Who are you?
Mason: Well, they said you had a memory lapse. I would never have believed it if I hadn’t seen with my own eyes. Adam, it’s Mason. Mason Eckhart.
Adam: You know what happened to me?
Mason: A band of outlaws set you up. Thieves, liars the lot of them. They call themselves Mutant X.
Adam: And Griffin’s one of these mutants?
Mason: Yes, I’m afraid so. Now our doctors are working feverishly to assess what he did to you so we can reverse the process.
Adam: Restore my memory?
Mason: God willing. We desperately need you back, Adam, as soon as possible.
Adam: Wait, wait, wait. You and I work together?
Mason: I keep forgetting you’re in the dark here. Bastards! We work at Genomex, a biotech firm which is actually a secret branch of US intelligence. You’re our cheif biogeneticist.
Adam: And this is why they’re trying to set me up?
Mason: Well, to discredit Genomex and myself.
Adam: Right. This makes some sense. But now, wait, wait. These mutants, are their abilities the result of natural evolution?
Mason: Sadly, no. These anomalies are the tragic results of genetic experimentations gone wrong. Our job is to protect the world from their freakish powers.
Adam: Oh, so you and I are trying to cure these anomalies?
Mason: Adam, this isn’t the place to discuss these sensitive matters. Trust me, it will all be clear we get you home to Genomex.
Adam: How can you convince the cops to let me out? And what makes you so sure that I’m so innocent?
Mason: Adam, please. We both know you’d never be capable of something so barbarous as murder.
Guard: Hey, time's up.
Mason: Dig deep into your core to find the inner strength you need in this time of struggle. I only ask you to be patient. I’m pulling as many strings as I can to arrange for your release.
Adam: Mason? Thank you.
Shalimar: Wait 'til I get my hands on this guy. I'll give him some memories of my own.
Jesse: Adam, it’s me. It’s Jesse.
Adam: You’re one of them, aren’t you? You’re Mutant X.
Jesse: You remember?
Adam: No. My friend Mason Eckhart told me all about you. You and your kind.
Adam: I designed this? Not bad.
Brennan: Yeah, I’ll say.
Jesse: How’s it feel to be home?
Adam: I wish I could say it looks familiar, but somehow it feels right.
Adam: For some reason, I seem to be pretty good at picking things up.
Emma: You think?
Lena: We’ve just received word from the prison. Adam’s escaped.
Mason: And my day just keeps getting better by the minute.
Mason: I’ve always dreamt that this day would come.
Marc: That’s the dojo. It has a variety of functions, one of which is a virtual prison. They’re not going anywhere unless you want them to.
Lena: What do you plan on doing with this place?
Mason: It will be converted into a secret wing of Genomex. My pied de terre. Collect the others while I explore the rest of my home.
Shalimar: Get the hell out of my house.
Adam: What, are you just having a little a look around?
Mason: Adam, thank God you’re all right. We’ve come to rescue you from these monsters and take you back to Genomex.
Adam: No, I like it here.
Mason: You’re...
Adam: Back to my old self.
Mason: Ah.
Adam: Yeah. So why don’t you do yourself a favor and get your ass out of my Sanctuary?
Mason: I don’t think so. Since I’ve discovered you’re little hideout, your cloak of secrecy is all but vanished. Let’s face it, Adam. It’s over. [Adam punches him]
Emma: Looks like it worked.
Adam: Yeah.
Shalimar: You all right?
Adam: Yeah. Never better.
Brennan: Well, I guess that explains the fire back in your eyes.
Adam: You have no idea how long I've wanted to do that.
Mason: What did you say your name was? Never mind, it’s not important now. What I want to know is, what are all these people doing here?
Lena: I’m not exactly sure, sir.
Mason: Well, then. Back to... where you were. I would appreciate it if you would tell me where my office is.
